Organizational Overview
Summit School started in 1968 when a parent of twin boys with learning disabilities and a public-school special education teacher joined together to address the need for different teaching methodologies for students with learning differences. Summit School began with eight students in rented classrooms at the Congregational Church in West Dundee, Illinois. As enrollment grew, the locations changed, but the passion continues for creating innovative programs and instructional methods to maximize the potential of children with special needs.
For 55 years, Summit School, Inc.’s continued success and evolution have resulted from the ability to bridge the gap between individual student needs and school district services. As a non-profit, private school, Summit has been able to employ creative resources not always accessible to school districts to develop its programs. Today, Summit School utilizes feedback from students, families, and school districts to provide relevant, responsive programming. With this feedback in mind, Summit School has identified the need for more intensive programming with earlier intervening services to address and overcome mental health or trauma-induced barriers to learning and social-emotional development.
