Job Description:

The Registered Histotechnician is a certified Histotechnician who organizes and manages the flow of anatomic pathology specimens through the laboratory, from specimen receipt through preparation of final diagnostic slides. In addition to Unregistered Histotechnician responsibilities, the Registered Histotechnician may provide training and orientation to new team members and assist with advanced instrument and specimen troubleshooting.

The Registered Histotechnician supports the laboratory QA program by monitoring indicators such as quality control, temperatures, and instrument failures. They also perform instrument maintenance and troubleshooting and take corrective action when standards are not met. Caregivers in this role may also assist with surgical pathology gross examination, dependent on education verification and site-specific competencies.

Job Details:

  • Responsible for microtomy, cryotomy and embedding Anatomic Pathology specimens.
  • Utilizes appropriate histology and cytology staining techniques. Utilizes routine, special and immunohistochemical staining techniques. Ensures slides are free of artifacts. Ensures controls exhibit appropriate staining characteristics. Operates automatic stainers according to written protocols. Recognizes abnormal staining results and troubleshoots to correct the results. Completes staining within established turn-around- times. Maintains an inventory of stains as needed. Employs appropriate coverslipping of slides and maintains specimen identification integrity through the processes.
  • Reviews and evaluates completed tests for quality, accuracy, and completeness. Recognizes basic quality assurance problems and takes appropriate corrective action. Records and evaluates quality control data. Identifies and implements solutions to problems as identified through Quality Assurance, Quality Control or Performance Improvement Initiatives.
  • Assists in maintaining the laboratory section to CLIA , CAP and Joint Commission standards and regulatory requirements. Performs competency testing as required by accreditating agencies. Assists in performing maintenance per protocol. Troubleshoots instrumentation as required.
  • Documents and communicates information thoroughly and accurately. Maintains the work area in a clean, neat and functional manner. Restocks supplies and assists with inventory. Assists with orientation and training of new associates.
  • Performs special projects as assigned. Completes special projects and tasks within time guidelines and reviews progress with the section manager as needed. Assists in writing and reviewing new policy/procedure for the section as needed. Provides education to others as needed, assists in computer system design, upgrades, maintenance of database, if required. Participates in learning activities to expand understanding and knowledge of the field of histology.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree
  • HT Certification (ASCP)
  • Previous on the job training required Associate's Degree in Histotechnology Program may substitute for on the job training

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One (1) year laboratory experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Interact with others by effectively communicating, both orally and in writing.
  • Operate computers and other office equipment requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.
  • See and read computer monitors and documents.
  • Remain sitting or standing for long periods of time to perform work on a computer, telephone, or other equipment.
  • May require lifting and transporting objects and office supplies, bending, kneeling and reaching.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.

$25.58 - $39.49
