Responsible for performing routine and advanced histology techniques, utilizing procedures varying in complexity, to prepare pathology and cytology specimens, as defined by CLIA, for pathologist and cytotechnologist interpretation. Performs routine and advanced maintenance on all instrumentation and can actively troubleshoot instrument issues. Comprehension of regulatory requirements and may provide technical oversight of IHC/ISH which includes test validation and development of new technologies. The Histotechnologist promotes Essentia Healths vision statement and requires a high level of customer service skills to establish and enhance positive relationships with patients, co-workers, and others. Key Responsibilities:
- Routine and special staining procedures
- Correctly identifies, accessions, labels, prepares, and processes all pathology specimens in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures
- Performs advanced histochemistry and immunohistochemistry protocols and has advanced knowledge of technique
- Mohs and routine frozen sections as required in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of pathologic conditions on patients of all ages
- Assists staff pathologists in the grossing laboratory
- Participation in Quality Assurance, Quality Control monitoring, and instrument maintenance
- Participates in training new employees, students, and other personnel as appropriate training
- Serves on committees and teams as needed or assigned, actively participating in meetings and completing tasks or assignments
- Supports and implements patient safety and other safety practices as appropriate
Educational Requirements
- Graduate of an associate degree in Histotechnician
AND
- Baccalaureate degree from and accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both)
OR
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in grossing of routine biopsy specimens received from submitting locations as allowed by CLIA and other regulatory agencies
- 3 years of histology experience is preferred
Certification/Licensure Requirements:
- Histotechnologist (HTL) ASCP Certification
