POSITION SUMMARY
The Sous-Chef is second in command of the food services provided at Bethel Horizons. This position will assist the Executive Chef with the implementation and coordination of all cooking at Bethel Horizons. This position will also assist with maintaining appropriate inventory of food and other supplies needed for food service operations.
AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITY
The Sous-Chef is accountable to the Executive Chef and Operations Director for the quality and delivery of work produced. The Sous-Chef will also work with individual Program Directors and other camp staff as needed for various tasks. The Sous-Chef will supervise various hourly and volunteer positions to support the work of providing food service for all groups at Bethel Horizons.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Cooking
--Create and implement menus in cooperation with the Executive Chef for programs and retreats at Bethel Horizons - Menus will need to accommodate dietary needs and audience (for example, summer camp with children vs. high end adult groups)
--Cook and/or assist with cooking meals for groups at Bethel Horizons
Food Service Management
--Maintain inventory of food and supplies through various vendors
--Coordinate Outdoor Cooking Needs with Summer Camp Program Director
Supervision
--Design schedules and create weekly food plans in collaboration with the Executive Chef
General
--Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
--Willingness to work in an environment committed to fostering a better understanding of God, Self, Nature, and Others
--2-3 years of managerial food service experience required
--ServSafe Certified preferred
--Ability to take initiative is required
--Strong organizational skills required
--Excellent communication skills required
--Thrive in a fast paced environment
WORK ENVIRONMENT
--Primarily perform work in a camp and retreat center commercial kitchen environment
--Frequently move around the camp, retreat center, and kitchens, and access or use computers, office equipment, telephone, and any other pertinent supplies, space or equipment used to perform the duties of the position
--Work with frequent interruption
--Lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

Bethel Horizons is a year-round facility located on more than 548 acres of prairie, forests, wetlands and valleys bordering Governor Dodge State Park. Through its outdoor summer camp, retreat and event center, adventure courses, nature experiences and art education campus, it endeavors to develop and perpetuate a physical, social, intellectual, and spiritual environment which will strengthen and enhance the understanding of a person’s relation to God, Self, Others, and Nature. The population that we serve for summer camp comes from a diverse set of socio-economic backgrounds.
