1. Position Summary:

A Respiratory Therapy Assistant is defined as a person who is a full-time student in an accredited Respiratory Therapy program, preferably within the second year. Under supervision of Respiratory Therapists, the assistant performs basic tasks, which have been learned in class and practiced in the school laboratory setting. These tasks have also been practiced with demonstrated competency during clinical rotations at area hospitals. The assistant follows SMC Departmental Policies and Procedures and performs tasks only after successful passing of theoretical tests and practical competencies, administered by SMC Respiratory Therapy Department leadership. As the assistant progresses in knowledge and experience, their job scope widens, as they demonstrate more and more skills and proficiencies.

1. Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Performs patient assessment, delivers basic Oxygen and aerosolized medication therapy.

1. Performs CPR, Arterial Blood Gas Analysis, sputum induction and other basic diagnostic tests, as assigned.

1. Cleans and performs pre-use testing for various respiratory care equipment, machines etc.

1. Performs Electrocardiogram and alerts appropriate providers when necessary.

1. Assists in home oxygen discharge and setting up durable medical equipment (DME).

1. Adequately documents delivered patient care and all other assigned tasks.

1. Functions as a team member in care of patients.

1. Communicates with co-workers, and other professionals, including physicians, nurses etc. to assist with quality patient care.

1. Maintains high standards of clinical excellence, according to Departmental policies.

1. Maintains clinical productivity standards.

1. Maintains technical clinical expertise through inquisitive curiosity.

1. Maintains patient confidentiality according to SMC HIPAA policies.

This position supports the mission at Swedish Medical Center of optimizing quality of life of all those served by expanding beyond the traditional focus on medical needs to the needs of the whole person. Responsible for implementing Respiratory Care procedures based on the policies and Procedures of the Respiratory precautions, maintain and cleaning equipment, and performing any other duties deemed necessary by the shift supervisor.

1. Position Requirements:

1. Education: High school diploma

1. Experience: 6 months previous experience, preferred.

1. Special Qualifications: Knowledge of respiratory principles and procedures, hospital supplies, and hospital routines preferred.

1. Licensure/certification/registration: Basic Life Support Certification
